Stoffel Vandoorne has become the all time leader of GP2 race victories in the ten year history of the Series, wrapping up his 11th win in Abu Dhabi.

Pierre Gasly started from pole for the third time this season and defended his position superbly from a fast starting Vandoorne who attempted to pass on the inside.

After leading for three laps Gasly’s tyres lost performance almost instantly and he lost the lead to Vandoorne and then second place to Mitch Evans in the space of just five corners.

Pit stops got underway as soon as the pit stop window opened and Gasly’s day got worse when he was handed a five second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

The virtual safety car made an appearance after Nicholas Latifi crashed into the side of Norman Nato at the penultimate corner and the pair were unable to get going again.

Raffaele Marciello stayed out for a long first stint and pitted on lap 26 after leading for 19 laps. The Trident driver’s strategy paid off as he rejoined the race in second place behind Vandoorne. Artem Markelov tried the same strategy but retired on track just laps before his scheduled stop.

Sean Gelael provided an embarrassing moment in the closing laps when he crashed in the pit lane exit after locking up both front wheels. The Indonesian driver was well out of contention.

Stoffel Vandoorne was untouchable after he took the lead in the opening laps and crossed the line to win his seventh race of the season. Raffaele Marciello sealed second place and just his fourth podium of the season and Mitch Evans rounded out the top three.
