Stoffel Vandoorne has become GP2 Series Champion with four races remaining in the 2015 campaign.
Vandoorne sealed the title today in Sochi with a fourth place finish, ahead of his main rival Alexander Rossi.
The American needed to finish ahead of Vandoorne and outscore him by at least nine points to keep the title battle alive until the next event in Bahrain next month. He failed to do so by finishing in sixth place.
Vandoorne’s season started perfectly with pole position, fastest lap and the race win in Bahrain and he went on to win the following three Feature Races. The ART driver and McLaren junior has only finished off the podium in three races to this point with his lowest finishing position being eighth in Monaco.
Vandoorne is the first driver from Belgium to win the GP2 crown and is ART’s first champ since Nico Hulkenberg won in his maiden year with the French team.
