Richie Stanaway has escaped a penalty from the stewards and keeps his race victory.
The Status driver led the Sprint Race after inheriting the lead from Arthur Pic on the first lap until he was overtaken by Rio Haryanto just moments before the safety car was deployed.
Johnny Cecotto’s crash neutralised the race with two laps to go when Haryanto was in the lead.
Moments later it appeared Stanaway retook the race lead when the safety car was on track.
The incident caused confusion but the New Zealander was not included in the list of drivers penalised for overtaking a rival under safety car conditions.
“Obviously, if there had been no safety car I would have been full throttle next to him [Haryanto] and then fought hard to stay alongside until the next corner,” Stanaway told gp2series.com.
“But because we saw the board, I didn’t fight and I lost the position after I saw the board.
“I felt like had it not been for the safety car I would have still been ahead so I took the position back.
Afterward, we reviewed the footage with the stewards and we could see that it was the case. Fortunately we could keep the head.”
Haryanto went on to finish in second place.
