Richie Stanaway has won the Sochi Sprint Race in controversial style, his second victory of the season while Stoffel Vandoorne finished ahead of Alexander Rossi to seal the 2015 GP2 Series Championship.

Arthur Pic started from pole position but lost first place by the second corner.

The safety car was brought out when Rene Binder and Marlon Stockinger collided after they were distracted by Sergey Sirotkin causing Dean Stoneman to spin.

Rossi needed to outscore Vandoorne by nine points to keep his title hopes alive until the next event but the Belgian championship leader put space between them both on track.

In the closing couple of laps, Johnny Cecotto crashed heavily at turn three but got out of his Trident car unharmed. Rio Haryanto passed Richie Stanaway just before the safety car was deployed. Two corners later, Stanaway retook the race lead from Haryanto irregardless of the fact the safety car had been deployed.

The New Zealander went on to collect his second race win of the season ahead of Haryanto – a result which may change with a stewards inquiry. Raffaele Marciello finished third on the podium.

In fourth place was Stoffel Vandoorne who – finishing ahead of main rival Alexander Rossi – wrapped up the 2015 GP2 Series Championship with four races still remaining.
