Pierre Gasly has edged Mitch Evans in Qualifying to take his maiden pole position in GP2, one year after making his debut in the Series.
It was déjà vu at the start of the session when Sergey Sirotkin was the first driver to set a benchmark lap time, just like he did in Practice earlier in the day.
RUSSIAN TIME’s Mitch Evans took control of Qualifying soon after and sat at the top of the standings with his time of 1:31.424. Stoffel Vandoorne, Pierre Gasly, Alex Lynn and Sergey Sirotkin sat behind the New Zealander at the midway point.
Racing Engineering’s Alexander Rossi and Hilmer Motorsport’s Simon Trummer were the only drivers to exploit the empty track with 15 minutes to go. Rossi improved only to 15th – but later jumped up to P10 – while Trummer remained in 21st.
Few improvements were made in the closing minutes of the session. Pierre Gasly was the biggest mover as the Frenchman jumped up from P3 to pole position and sealed his first ever race start from the front of the pack.
Mitch Evans qualified second on the grid ahead of Championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne who was two tenths off the ultimate pace set by Gasly.
