British racer Jann Mardenborough is to graduate to GP2 this weekend as he joins Julián Leal at Carlin.
Mardenborough is making the step up to GP2 in place of Sean Gelael who has an event clash with Formula Renault 3.5.
“Firstly I’m extremely excited to drive a GP2 car for the first time, it’s an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down,” Mardenborough said.
“I want to move up to GP2 in the future so to have this experience now is very valuable.
“I want to be competitive but the challenges in GP2 are very different to GP3; with DRS and two tyres compounds, as well as longer races and pit stops, although I’m used to those from sports car racing.”
Mardenborough has been competing in the GP3 Series since the beginning of 2014 and bagged a race win in Germany last summer.
This season he switched to the Carlin team having previously raced with Arden but has had mixed fortunes – the Briton has only scored points in three races.
