Daniël de Jong has been transferred to hospital following his horror crash in today’s Feature Race at Spa-Francorchamps.
The Dutchman was taken to hospital in Liège by helicopter having been assessed at the circuit medical centre.
GP2 Series organisers have said he is “conscious and talking” and that more information will be given in due course.
De Jong collided with Pierre Gasly on the run up to Blanchimont on lap five of the race.
The result of the contact was de Jong losing his front wing and all control of his MP Motorsport car at 180mph. He hit the wall with all wheels locked up and his car became buried in the tyre barrier.
A 40 minute red flag period followed the crash as de Jong was extracted from his car and repairs were made to the destroyed tyre barrier.
Gasly was handed a ten second time penalty for his actions which led to the crash.
Daniël de Jong had four hour surgery in Liège to repair a broken vertebrae in his back.
The surgery went well and de Jong remains in a stable condition.
