Championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne has set the early pace at the Hungaroring with a number of blistering laps.
The track temperatures at the Hungaroring were topping out at 50°C so tyre degradation was an issue for the drivers early on. Another problem was traffic as drivers sought to find free space on the circuit.
Alexander Rossi set the first flying lap with a 1:30.9 but the American’s time was soon eclipsed by a number of his rivals including Alex Lynn and Pierre Gasly.
Stoffel Vandoorne was the fastest driver after the first 15 minutes of activity; the Belgian’s lap time of 1:28.969 went unbeaten for the remainder of the session.
Sergio Canamasas and Norman Nato both had separate incidents at turn five when they lost grip and ran wide. The pair continued without any real damage.
Despite being fast early on, Rossi was forced to sit in the pits for a large chunk of the session as a front left brake problem was resolved by his mechanics.
The second half of the session saw very little change in the standings so Stoffel Vandoorne finished at the top ahead of Rio Haryanto, Alex Lynn, Arthur Pic and Pierre Gasly.
Debutante Sean Gelael finished the session in last place and half a second behind 25th placed man Nicholas Latifi who is making a return to the Series this weekend.
