Alex Lynn has secured his first ever GP2 Series pole position with an incredible lap in the middle of the session in Budapest.
Alexander Rossi was the first driver to set a representative lap time, just like he was in Practice earlier today. The American put all four wheels off the track at turn three and his rivals were easily able to get the better of him because of this mistake.
Stoffel Vandoorne’s lap time of 1:28.258 saw him sit at the top of the time sheets until the midway point of the session ahead of Raffaele Marciello, Rio Haryanto and Pierre Gasly.
Campos driver Arthur Pic used the virtually empty track in the middle of the session to improve his time. The Frenchman jumped up to P3 and stayed there until the end of the checquered flag.
DAMS team mates Pierre Gasly and Alex Lynn had the same idea as Pic and both managed to make up some time. Gasly moved to P4 but was later bumped down to P5 by Marciello. Lynn’s improvement saw him leap to provisional pole position by just 0.019 seconds.
The final laps saw no improvements at the top of the standings and Alex Lynn was able to celebrate his first ever pole position as a GP2 driver with his mechanics in the pit lane.
