Alexander Rossi has revealed that he is “just as confident” as his title rival Stoffel Vandoorne and believes he can catch him to take the 2015 crown.

Speaking to Motorsport.com, Rossi spoke about different subjects but mainly how he has the hunger and confidence to beat ART driver Vandoorne to become 2015 GP2 Champion.

When asked whether it was impossible to catch Vandoorne, the American replied “No! He has really put everything together, but I feel like we’ve been on par with him, really, for a lot of things”.

The Racing Engineering driver did concede that he has been lacking pace, however “Okay, our outright pace hasn’t quite been there, but I think our team is really strong in terms of strategy and decisions, and our race pace is really, really good.”

Reminded about Stefano Coletti’s mid-season meltdown two seasons ago, Rossi remarked “He [Vandoorne] has a big, big advantage at the moment, but this is GP2. We have seen it before with Stefano and Fabio, where everyone thought Stefano had the championship in the bag and Fabio came back to win.

“It’s not the same situation with Stoffel obviously, he’s looking very, very good right now. He’s with a great team, he’s in a good place, but I feel just as confident.”

Rossi is currently 65 points behind Vandoorne in the Drivers’ Standings and has only finished ahead of the Belgian on track three times in ten races.

If Rossi wants to become 2015 champ, he will have to outscore Vandoorne by almost seven points in each of the remaining ten races.
