The FIA has received an offer from GP2 Series Limited to become the promoter of the future FIA Formula 2 Championship.
A World Motor Sport Council meeting was held in Mexico City today where it was revealed that GP2 Series was willing to offer its services to run the new F2 Championship.
The first revelation about a new Formula 2 was at the beginning of the year when new criteria to gain a superlicence was revealed which included a “future FIA F2 Championship”.
A deal between the FIA and GP2 Series Limited has not been finalised as “discussions are ongoing with the aim being to secure the best possible FIA F2 Championship”.
If the deal to have GP2 Series Limited run FIA F2 was to go ahead, it would appear that the GP2 Series would cease to exist and teams currently involved with the Series would be invited to take part in the newly created FIA F2 Championship.
The timescale to get Formula 2 up and running is not known but 2017 would be a viable suggestion.
