The 11th (ELEVENTH) GP2 season is well underway and the fourth event on this year’s calendar takes the Series to Spielberg in Austria for just the second time.
Stoffel Vandoorne leads the way in the Drivers’ Championship but that’s a given considering the imperious and dominant nature of his driving so far this season. The Belgian ace has been off the podium only once in six races this year – the Sprint Race in Monaco now you ask. Maybe he was just giving everyone else a go at winning?
Vandoorne is a huge 44 points ahead of his nearest rival Alexander Rossi who has just 70 points. Rio Haryanto is another 21 points behind the American on 49 while Mitch Evans is ANOTHER 21 points behind him on 28. Vandoorne could almost stay at home this weekend and still lead the championship.
The only driver change to note this weekend is Johnny Cecotto making way for Simon Trummer which is a shame given that Cecotto took pole position at the Red Bull Ring last year and went on to win the Sprint Race too. The Feature Race was won by Felipe Nasr so there’s no chance of any déjà vu this weekend.
Jordan King – Racing Engineering’s rookie driver – remains in the Series but will have to serve a three place grid penalty for the Feature Race having been deemed responsible for the monster crash he suffered in Monaco.
Pirelli has selected the white marked Medium and the red marked Supersoft compound tyres for this weekend which should create a 50/50 split between drivers starting the races on each tyre compound.
The onboard cameras will be run by: Alexander Rossi, Raffaele Marciello, Arthur Pic and Richie Stanaway.
