Jolyon Palmer has been crowned 2014 GP2 Series Champion following the Feature Race at the Sochi Autodrom.

The DAMS driver went into the Feature Race needing a victory and for his title rival Felipe Nasr not to score points to wrap up the Championship before the final three races.

Palmer pitted under the Safety Car sparked by Stefano Coletti stopping out on track. The Briton secured the de facto race lead with 18 laps to go and secured the true race victory after his rivals ahead pitted for the option tyres.

Felipe Nasr – Palmer’s main rival – was handed a drive through penalty in the early stages of the race and was unable to climb back up the order to grab a point to delay Palmer’s coronation of 2014 Champion.

Palmer secured his fourth race victory of the season to be crowned Champion and is still yet to finish a race this season outside of the top eight positions.

DAMS now has won the Drivers’ Championship on three occasions – Romain Grosjean was guided to the crown back in 2011 and Davide Valsecchi one year later in 2012.

2006 GP2 Series Champion is the only other British driver to take top honours in the feeder category.
