Two weeks on from a pretty exciting GP2 weekend we arrive in Italy at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza for Round 9 of the 2014 campaign. Felipe Nasr closed the gap to Jolyon Palmer in the Drivers’ Standings which now leaves us in a more exciting position as fans. We have a fight on our hands!
Most of the talk about the historical Monza circuit in the lead up to this weekend has been the change to the runoff area at Parabolica. The authorities insist it has increased the safety of the track which is something I commend. Furthermore, in GP2 it’s not just about one corner; we get overtakes at any given moment.
News to bring you up-to-date about is a couple of driver changes. Tom Dillmann announced that he was not to compete in Monza due to Porsche commitments which is understandable as the Frenchman is looking ahead to his racing career away from single seaters. In a big surprise to everyone, Red Bull’s junior driver Pierre Gasly was announced as Dillmann’s replacement at Caterham Racing; the first driver from the energy drink scheme in GP2 since 2008.
The second change was another high profile exit. Conor Daly is not competing this weekend due to financial reasons. His replacement is Sergio Campana who made his Series debut this time last year in Monza with Trident.
Pirelli has nominated the Hard and Medium compound tyres for this weekend. Tyre degradation at Monza isn’t usually that high and with the most durable tyres available to drivers this weekend, expect split strategies in the Feature Race.
